Complex Vein Access for Orthobiologic Treatments

Recently, I treated a patient who had previously undergone multiple forearm surgeries, resulting in a difficult vascular profile and limited accessible veins. For past procedures, securing sufficient blood for orthobiologic treatments had required multiple sticks, which was challenging for both the patient and my staff. Today’s procedure was more extensive, requiring even more blood, so I needed a precise, dependable way to access his veins with minimal attempts.

Ultrasound-Guided IV Access Using My Konica Minolta Ultrasound Machine

To optimize the procedure, I used my Konica Minolta ultrasound machine with its high-resolution touchscreen and color Doppler feature. As I scanned his arm, I could clearly see the brachial artery pulsing with its distinct, rich reddish-orange color. Just medial to it, I observed the collapsible brachial vein. This real-time visibility allowed me to use a 16-gauge IV catheter and guided the needle into the exact position of the vein without unnecessary attempts, a process that would have been nearly impossible with a traditional approach. Once the catheter was securely placed in the brachial vein, my nurse was able to draw the required tubes of blood and establish a secure IV line for the procedure with the same IV catheter I had just placed for drawing the blood.

What This Means for Doctors

For practitioners specializing in orthobiologics, this approach provides a highly effective solution for patients with complex vascular histories. Real-time ultrasound guidance not only minimizes the number of needle sticks but also boosts efficiency and patient satisfaction. It empowers us to complete procedures with precision, making even challenging blood draws manageable.

What This Means for Patients

For patients, ultrasound-guided procedures reduce discomfort by minimizing needle attempts and creating a smoother, faster experience. With advanced imaging, I can make the entire treatment process more comfortable and precise, ensuring each step of your care is as seamless as possible.
